Class 3 Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) Maths
This
week, most of Class 3 have been using the first stage of the CPA (Concrete, Abstract, Pictorial) approach in maths to develop
their understanding of finding Factor Pairs of given numbers.
The CPA approach introduces
abstract concepts in a concrete way. It
involves moving from concrete materials, to pictorial representations, to
abstract symbols and problems.
The children were finding the
factors (2 numbers multiplied together to give an answer (or product)) of a
given amount. They collected the same number of multilink cubes and they investigated
how many different equal groups they could make. This was the concrete (practical)
way of finding factors to given amounts.
After
grouping the multilink into the equal groups shown above, they found that the factors
of 6 are 1, 6, 2, 3
Great math's learning
