Year 5 and Well-being Forest School

Fire and S’mores at Forest School

Both groups had another fun-filled session today at Forest School. We started the session with some mindfulness in a nature spot or for Year 5 trying some tree- laxation. This allowed the children the opportunity to be still, quiet and notice what was around them. The tree-laxation exercise meant the children could experience a different perspective whilst lying under a tree and see what they noticed from their position.

During the session, all the children had the chance to make s’mores by toasting a marshmallow at the fire and sandwiching it between two chocolate biscuits. There was some excellent fire-lighting going on too, with some experimentation using tinder bundles and making and using char-cloth to light a fire from embers rather than a flame.

There was some fantastic team-work today with a brilliant den being built. It involved lots of communication, trial and error and perseverance to create a spectacular den. There was also an imaginative game this morning, which involved negotiation and compromise to keep everyone playing, engaged and happy, which was fantastic to see.

At the end of the session, the children reflected on which of their character strengths they had used during the session. Many of the children identified their perseverance on a task or their bravery to try something new and challenging. Others identified their team-work and communication in group tasks they had undertaken. It was fabulous to hear the children identifying and acknowledging their own areas of strength and what they are good at.

Wishing you a wonderful week,

Mrs Rassell.
