Reception Class Blog – Weekly Learning Update

Reception Class Blog – Weekly Learning Update

What a wonderful week we’ve had in Reception! The children have been busy exploring, learning, and putting their new skills into practice through a range of exciting activities. Here's a look at what we’ve been up to:

Phonics and Reading

This week in phonics, the children were introduced to the sounds: h, b, f, and l. They have been working hard to recognise and blend these sounds in words during our phonics sessions.

We also shared the story Let’s Go! from the Let’s Read Together series, which the children really enjoyed. In small group guided reading, the children practised using their phonics knowledge to read the book: Tap, Pat, Nap – it’s been fantastic to see their confidence growing as they begin to read more independently.

English

In English, the children continued working on their very own story booklets. They have been learning that a word is a sound or group of letters that tells us something. Each child drew and described what happened to their character, talked about how their character was feeling, and shared what happened at the end of their story. It was a joy to see them proudly sharing their books with the class!

Maths

Our focus in maths has been on subitising (recognising small quantities without counting). The children explored quantities of 2, 3, and 4 using their fingers, counters, and cubes. They also listened to auditory patterns and tried to subitise these too!

We worked on recognising when a group of objects had been rearranged and used positional language to describe patterns of 4. The children enjoyed copying these patterns using different resources in class.

Science

In science, our focus was on the senses – particularly sight and hearing. The children played a sound game where they identified familiar home sounds and even made their own sounds using classroom objects!

They also explored the sense of smell, trying to identify different scents including curry powder, cinnamon, vinegar, and coffee. There were some interesting reactions as they described the smells and shared whether they liked or disliked each one!

Spanish

In Spanish, the children learned to say “Goodbye” – or “Adiós”! They are really enjoying learning new words each week.

Continuous Provision

As always, alongside our direct teaching, the children have had lots of opportunities to explore all areas of the classroom. It’s been lovely to see them applying their new knowledge in their play – whether using positional language in construction, writing in their story booklets during free writing, or re-creating sounds in the music area!
