🌟 Reception Weekly Round-Up! 🌟
What a fun and busy week we’ve had in Reception! The children have continued to grow in confidence with their learning and have enjoyed lots of hands-on activities.
🔤 Phonics
This week, we learned the sounds ff, ll, ss, s (saying /z/ when it comes at the end of some words). The children have been practising spotting these sounds in words and having a go at blending them to read simple words. Keep an ear out for them pointing out these sounds at home!
📚 Guided Reading
Our decodable book this week was In the Bag. The children did a wonderful job using their phonics to sound out and blend the words. We talked about what might be in the bag and shared our own ideas — fantastic early comprehension skills developing!
✍️ Writing
In writing, we focused on handwriting practice, forming some of our letter sounds carefully. We’ve also been matching and writing our names, which everyone is becoming very proud of!
To help strengthen our fingers for writing, we enjoyed fine motor activities and joined in with Dough Disco — lots of fun squeezing, rolling and pinching the dough to music!
🔬 Science
Our science focus was the sense of taste. The children had a brilliant time trying different drinks and guessing what they were — there were some funny faces and giggles along the way! We also recapped all five senses, thinking carefully about which senses we use at different times.
🔢 Maths
In maths, we explored comparing two sets of objects, learning to say which group has ‘more than’ and which has ‘fewer than’. The children used lots of practical resources to build their understanding and explain their reasoning.
🎃 Design & Technology
To get into the Halloween spirit, we made our very own spooky biscuits! The children designed, decorated, and (of course) enjoyed eating their creations — a perfect mix of creativity and tasty fun!
We’re so proud of how hard the children have worked this week. It’s wonderful to see their growing independence and enthusiasm for learning.
