Our Busy week in reception

Reception Class Weekly Blog

What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in Reception! The children have been working so hard across all areas of their learning — we are so proud of them!

🐸 Phonics

This week, we began level 3 phonics and learned some brand-new sounds: j, v, w, x, y. The children enjoyed learning the actions that go with each sound and have been practising blending these sounds together to read CVC words such as jam, vet, win, and box.
We have also continued to practise our tricky words: I, no, go, the, and to. The children are getting more confident at spotting these in their reading books and writing them independently.

🔢 Maths

In maths, we have been practising subitising amounts to 4 — recognising how many without needing to count each object. The children revisited the concepts of ‘more than’ and ‘fewer than’ by comparing groups of up to 3 objects and matching them 1:1.
They have been fantastic at spotting when there is an equal number, too many, or not enough. We even built towers using cubes to compare groups, matching them 1:1 and describing what we noticed. It’s been wonderful to hear so much mathematical language being used!

✍️ Handwriting

In handwriting, we have been learning to write our capital letters: S, A, T, I, P. The children have focused on starting each letter in the correct place and using careful, controlled movements.

🧠 Science

Our science learning has focused on healthy eating and diet. We talked about what our bodies need to stay healthy and how fruits and vegetables help us grow strong.
In art, we linked this learning by creating close observational drawings of apples. The children used charcoal to sketch, exploring shading and texture — the results were amazing!

✏️ English

In English, we continued to draw and write about our special person. The children are becoming much more confident in saying their sentences aloud before writing them, and it’s lovely to see their pride in their finished work.

📚 Guided Reading

We enjoyed reading our new Rhino Reader books, Len and Ren. The children practised using their phonics to decode words and talked about what happened in the story. It’s great to see their love of reading growing each week!

💬 PSHE

Our PSHE focus this week was on understanding how we are the same and different. We read the story Harold Shares His Scarf, which helped us think about kindness, sharing, and what makes each of us special. The children shared lovely ideas about friendship and how we can help others feel included.

It’s been a fantastic week of learning, creativity, and fun. Well done, Reception — you’ve worked so hard! 🌈
