Reception Weekly Learning Blog
We’ve had a busy and exciting week in Reception, full of new sounds, stories, investigations and festive fun! Here’s a little look at what we’ve been learning:
Phonics
This week we learnt the new sounds y, z, zz, qu and ch.
The children have been working hard to spot these sounds in words, blend them when reading, and use them when writing simple words. You might like to see if your child can find objects at home beginning with some of these sounds!
Writing
We have been focusing on forming our capital letters I, N and M carefully, using the correct formation and starting points.
In class we have been reading lots of books with patterns and rhyme. Our key texts included:
📚 The Cat and the Rat
📚 There’s a Bear on My Chair
📚 Oi Cat!
📚 This Is the Bear
The children enjoyed identifying simple rhyming words and even created their very own rhyming books using patterns such as cat, hat, bat. It was wonderful to see their confidence in hearing and generating rhymes grow throughout the week.
Science
In Science, the children explored the theme of homes and the services we use.
We talked about the different types of homes people live in and learned about the important services inside our houses—such as water and electricity—and what we use them for. The children loved discussing their own homes and comparing how they are the same or different from their friends’.
Maths
This week in Maths, we compared objects using size words such as big, little, large and small.
We also began exploring the concept of wholes and parts. Using our bodies and familiar toys, the children learned that a “whole” is often made up of smaller parts—and that the whole is always bigger than its parts. This is an important early step in understanding number composition later in the year.
R.E.
In Religious Education, we explored the question:
“Why do Christians perform Nativity plays at Christmas?”
We talked about the Christmas story, learning why this time of year is so special to Christians.
Music
Our Nativity rehearsals are in full swing! The children have been practising their songs with great enthusiasm and are beginning to perform with confidence. We can’t wait to share it with you soon.
Thank you for your continued support—have a lovely weekend!
