We are all special! Reception weekly blog

Reception Class Blog – This Week’s Learning

What a wonderful and busy week we’ve had in Reception! The children have been engaged, curious, and full of enthusiasm as we explored new learning and revisited familiar ideas across all areas of the curriculum.

Phonics
This week, we recapped all of our Level 2 sounds and revisited the tricky words I, no, go, to, and the. The children have been practising recognising these sounds in words and using them in their early reading and writing. We also focused on correct letter formation as part of our handwriting sessions — everyone is working hard on writing the Level 2 sounds neatly and confidently.

Literacy
Our book focus this week was on special people. We read The Must-Have Mum, Me and My Sister, and My Grandpa, and talked about what makes the people in our lives special to us. The children then had the chance to create their very own books all about someone who is special to them — they were so proud to share their writing and illustrations!

Creative Learning
The classroom was full of colour and creativity! We coloured beautiful firework pictures and used play dough to create bonfires and fireworks as part of our Bonfire Night learning. The children also made a lovely hand print poppy wreath to commemorate Remembrance Day — it was a thoughtful and meaningful activity.

Science
In Science, we learnt about being safe around electricity and how to use electrical items carefully. We also explored fruits and vegetables — discussing what makes them different, sorting them into groups, and naming a variety of examples. The children finished by drawing some of their favourite fruits and vegetables.

Maths – Mastering Number
Our Mastering Number sessions focused on understanding that counting helps us find out how many objects there are altogether. The children practised careful 1:1 counting, matching one movement or tag to each number said aloud. We also deepened our understanding of 5 by linking it to our five fingers and exploring different ways to represent it — including the Hungarian number pattern.

PSHE
We sang along with Harold the Giraffe’s song, “I’m special, you’re special”, and enjoyed the story Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear? The children discussed Little Bear’s feelings and shared ideas about what makes them feel safe and happy at bedtime.

Open Door
A big thank you to all the parents, carers, and grandparents who joined us for our Open Door session. It was wonderful to see so many of you exploring the classroom and sharing your child’s learning — the children were so proud to show you around!

We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we look forward to more exciting learning next week!
