Supporting Your Child’s Reading at Home

Supporting Your Child’s Reading at Home

Reading regularly at home plays a vital role in helping children become confident, fluent, and enthusiastic readers. While we support reading every day at school, the time children spend reading at home—especially with an adult—has a powerful impact on their progress.

When children read at home, they:

  • Practice and reinforce the skills they are learning in class

  • Build fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension

  • Grow in confidence and develop a love of books

As a school, we aim for children to read at home at least four times a week. Even short, regular reading sessions make a big difference.

How We Support Reading at School

  • Daily reading practice developing their reading skills and comprehension

  • Teachers regularly check reading logs to see how often children are reading at home

  • Children are encouraged to change their home reading books frequently to keep reading enjoyable

  • We make sure children are reading books that are suitable for their reading level and help them move on as their skills improve

  • Children who need extra support receive additional reading time at school, including one-to-one or small-group support

How You Can Help at Home

  • Listen to your child read regularly and talk about the book together

  • Encourage your child to read a range of books they enjoy

  • Sign or comment in your child’s reading log so we can celebrate their efforts

  • Help your child remember to bring their reading book and log to school each day

We love to celebrate reading success! Children are recognised in class through rewards such as certificates, house points, and special celebrations, helping to create a positive reading culture.

Thank you for your continued support. By working together, we can help every child become a confident, capable, and enthusiastic reader.
