Year 6 SATs
Year 6 SATs - Supporting Your Child Through SATs
I want to begin by saying how proud we are of the effort they put into their learning every day. As SATs approach, we know this can be an anxious time for them and families, and our aim is to work in close partnership with you to ensure your child feels confident, supported and ready.
SATs are important, but they are only one part of your child’s learning journey. What truly makes a difference is consistent support, encouragement and wellbeing—both in school and at home.
Understanding SATs
SATs help us understand how well children have grasped key skills in English and Mathematics across primary school. They allow us to identify strengths and areas where further support may be needed as children move forward in their education.
Please be reassured: SATs do not define your child or determine their future success. Our focus is on helping every child do their best in a calm and positive environment.
Ways you can help at home:
- Practicing times tables
- Short creative writing
- Reading and quizzing them on their books practicing comprehension skills
- Practicing to identify different types of grammar
- Practicing spelling
- Exposure to lots of vocabulary
The Importance of Weekly Homework
Homework plays a vital role in preparing children for SATs and reinforcing learning that takes place in class. Regular completion of weekly homework helps children to:
Consolidate key skills
Build confidence and independence
Develop responsibility and good learning routines (preparing for secondary school)
Become familiar with SATs-style questions
We strongly encourage all pupils to complete their homework each week, as this regular practice has a significant impact over time.
How parents can help at home:
Set aside a consistent time for homework each week
Provide a quiet space with minimal distractions
Encourage your child to attempt tasks independently
Praise effort and perseverance, not just correct answers
Spellings and Maths Practice
Spellings
Spelling practice is essential for success in reading and writing. Short, regular practice sessions are far more effective than last-minute revision.
You can support your child by:
Practising spellings little and often
Encouraging your child to say the words aloud
Using the spellings in sentences
Talking about spelling patterns and rules
Maths.co.uk
We use maths.co.uk to support maths learning and fluency. Regular use of this platform helps children strengthen key skills such as:
Times tables
Arithmetic accuracy
Speed and confidence with number facts
These skills are particularly important for SATs, where children need to work efficiently and accurately. We recommend short, regular sessions rather than long periods of practice.
Supporting Wellbeing at Home
While academic preparation is important, your child’s wellbeing is always our priority. Children learn best when they feel calm, supported and encouraged.
You can help by:
Maintaining regular routines, especially around sleep
Offering reassurance and listening to any worries
Encouraging breaks and balance between work and relaxation
Keeping conversations about SATs positive and low-pressure
If your child feels anxious, please remind them that it is okay to find learning challenging and that trying their best is what matters most.
The Power of Encouragement
Positive encouragement from home has a huge impact on children’s confidence. Simple, supportive messages can help children develop resilience and a positive mindset.
Helpful phrases include:
“I’m proud of the effort you’re putting in.”
“You’ve made great progress.”
“Mistakes help us learn.”
“Just do your best.”
Working Together
By working together - school and home - we can give your child the best possible support during SATs. Regular homework completion, consistent spelling and maths practice and a strong focus on wellbeing will help your child feel prepared and confident.
Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
