Reception Class – Learning This Week 🌈

Reception Class – Learning This Week 🌈

We’ve had another busy and exciting week in Reception, filled with lots of learning, creativity, and enthusiasm from the children. Here’s a little snapshot of what we’ve been getting up to in class.

Phonics 🔤

This week in phonics, the children started Level 4, where we began learning how to blend two consonants together in words. This is an important step in developing confident reading skills.
We also spent time recapping Level 2 and Level 3 sounds to make sure everyone feels secure and ready to apply their knowledge when reading and writing.

Spelling ✏️

Our focus spelling words this week were:
I, the, to, no, go
The children practised reading, writing, and using these words in simple sentences.

Handwriting ✍️

In handwriting, we have been working on long ladder letters, helping the children develop correct letter formation and pencil control.

Guided Reading 📖

During guided reading sessions, the children have been practising their blending skills, using their phonics knowledge to read words and simple sentences with growing confidence.

English 🐾

In English, we continued our animal story writing. The children drew pictures and talked about what their animal did on its adventure, then had a go at saying or writing simple sentences to match their ideas.
We will continue these stories next week, when our animals will encounter a problem and work towards a resolution.

Maths 🔢

In maths, we explored the “5 and a bit” structure, helping children understand numbers by breaking them into parts.
We also practised comparing quantities, using language such as more than and fewer than.
In shape work, we learned about shapes with 4 sides, including squares and rectangles (oblongs). The children also recapped triangles and circles, sorting shapes into groups based on whether they had 4 sides or not.

Science 🌱

In science, we discussed what animals need to survive, such as food, water, air, and shelter, and shared ideas about how different animals meet these needs.

Thank you for your continued support at home. We’re very proud of the children’s hard work this week and are looking forward to building on it next week! 😊
