What a fantastic and busy week we have had in Reception!

🎉 Celebrations and Festivals

This week we have been learning all about celebrations and festivals, with a special focus on Chinese New Year and the Year of the Horse. We talked about how families celebrate, including special food, decorations, parades and dragon dances.

We read the stories I Love Chinese New Year, Festivals, and Kipper’s Birthday. The children enjoyed comparing different types of celebrations and talking about how they celebrate their own birthdays and special days.

In English, the children drew beautiful pictures of a celebration. They practised writing a clear title and adding labels to their drawings.

🏮 Chinese New Year Activities

The children had lots of fun:

  • Making and decorating colourful lanterns

  • Exploring Chinese writing

  • Completing horse colouring pictures

  • Learning about why red is a lucky colour

📚 Story Time and Writing

We read the classic fairy tale Cinderella. The children worked very hard to write a dictated sentence about the story — we were so impressed with their listening and writing skills!

We also listened to and recited the poem “Popcorn”. The children loved joining in with the actions and using expressive voices.

In handwriting, we have been practising our long ladder letters, focusing on correct letter formation.

🗺️ Understanding Stories

We read Rosie’s Walk and talked about the different places Rosie visited. The children created their own maps to show her journey around the farm — fantastic geography skills!

💛 PSHE

In PSHE, we discussed the adults who help to keep us safe. We talked about recognising feelings when we feel unsafe and what we can do to keep ourselves safe. The children shared some very thoughtful ideas.

🔷 Maths

In Maths, we have been:

  • Learning about shapes with 4 sides

  • Finding shapes in our environment

  • Working with numbers within 10

  • Exploring “more” and “less”

  • Learning about the counting step pattern

  • Sorting numbers that are 6, 7, 8 and not 6, 7, 8

🐄 Science

In Science, we learnt about farms and farm animals. We talked about products that come from farm animals, such as milk, eggs and wool.

🕰️ History

We explored how time passes and how our environment can change over time using the story Katie’s Picture Show. The children began to understand that things in the past can be different from today.

Well done Reception for another wonderful week of learning! We are so proud of all your hard work 🌈
