Reception Weekly Learning Update
Reception Weekly Learning Update
What a wonderful week of learning we’ve had in Reception! The children have been busy, engaged, and working incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum.
Phonics & Spelling
In phonics, we continued working on Level 4, focusing on blending words with two consonants (consonant clusters). The children have been practising listening carefully to sounds and smoothly blending them together when reading and writing. We also revisited our Level 3 sounds to keep those skills fresh.
For spelling, we continued to build confidence with our tricky words: I, the, to, no, and go. The children also practised writing words containing consonant clusters, showing fantastic effort in applying their phonics knowledge.
Handwriting
This week’s handwriting focus was long ladder letters. The children concentrated on correct letter formation, pencil control, and starting points. We are really pleased with the progress we are seeing.
Guided Reading
During guided reading sessions, we concentrated on blending skills. The children are becoming increasingly confident at using their sounds to decode words — it’s lovely to see their independence growing.
English
In English, the children explored a story where they discovered how Fox became stuck on a branch and how he eventually got free. This helped inspire their own storytelling. The children completed their animal stories, ensuring their characters encountered a problem and included a resolution. We saw some wonderfully imaginative ideas!
Maths
In maths, we have been learning to count beyond 20. The children practised listening for the “ty” sound in numbers (such as twenty, thirty) and recognising that the ones continue the pattern.
We also explored one more and one less by building step towers with Unifix cubes. This hands-on activity really helped the children visualise number patterns. To reinforce this learning, we watched a Numberblocks clip about “one more,” which the children thoroughly enjoyed.
We continued our work on shapes with four sides. The children investigated folding and cutting squares and rectangles, exploring what new shapes could be created. This encouraged great problem-solving and curiosity.
Science
In science, we learned all about birds. The children enjoyed discussing different types of birds, their features, and where they live.
History
In history, we began learning about kings and queens. The children explored the idea of powerful people and discussed what makes a king or queen important.
Reading Update
We are aware that some parents have experienced difficulties logging into the Twinkl Rhino Reader website. We are currently investigating this issue. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience. In the meantime, please continue enjoying the books sent home in your child’s book bag.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We are so proud of how hard the children are working!
