Easter Learning Highlights in Class One

We have had a wonderfully busy and exciting week in Reception, filled with lots of Easter-themed learning and activities.

In our topic work, the children have been learning about the Easter story. We explored the meaning of Palm Sunday, learnt about palm leaves, and even practised saying the word “Hosannah.” We also discussed how Easter is celebrated around the world and looked at Christian Easter gardens. As part of our geography learning, we located Jerusalem on a map and explored images of what it looks like today.

We talked about the tradition of giving eggs at Easter and how this links to the Easter story. The children especially enjoyed taking part in an egg hunt in our class garden—there was lots of excitement and fun!

In Science, we have been learning about spring and the idea of new life, noticing changes in the world around us.

The children also enjoyed a range of creative activities, including making Easter headbands, colouring, and creating Easter cards.

In Maths, we have been using practical activities to sort objects according to different criteria such as size, colour, and function. The children have continued practising recalling doubles and have explored even and odd numbers through building Numberblocks characters. We also celebrated World Maths Day with fun outdoor number activities and problem-solving challenges.

In Phonics, the children have completed Level 4 and revisited Level 3 graphemes. They have continued to practise their blending and segmenting skills, as well as spelling tricky words.

For Handwriting, we have been focusing on our “one-armed robot” letters: h, m, and k.

We also thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the church for the Easter service—the children sang beautifully, and we were very proud of them.

Over the holidays, please try to continue reading at home and record any reading that is done. It does not have to be the school reading book to count towards an entry into the reading raffle—any three reads per week will count.

We hope you all have a wonderful and restful Easter break. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and all the learning you do at home.

Kind regards,
The Reception Team
