Reception Weekly Learning Blog

We have had another busy and exciting week in Reception! The children have been exploring stories, numbers, celebrations and ways to keep themselves safe online. Here is a look at what we have been learning.

World Book Day 📚

This week we celebrated World Book Day, and the children had a wonderful time sharing their love of books.

We read the story The Two Shoes and talked about the characters and what happened in the story. The children then designed their own creative front covers for the book. They also made colourful bookmarks to take home.

It was lovely to see everyone dressed as their favourite characters. The children drew pictures of the character they came dressed as and proudly shared the books they had brought from home with their friends.

Maths 🔢

In maths we have been learning about the composition of numbers 6 and 7.

The children watched clips from Numberblocks and used cubes to explore different ways to make 7. We practised using our stem sentences, such as:

  • 7 is made of 5 and 2

  • 7 is made of 4 and 3

To help us remember, we sang the song 7 Little Ducks, which the children really enjoyed!

English ✏️

In English we explored different celebrations that people enjoy throughout the year, including:

  • Christmas

  • Chinese New Year

  • Easter

  • Birthdays

The children drew pictures of celebrations that they know and wrote labels and captions to describe their drawings.

We also looked at an image linked to Chinese New Year and talked about the Year of the Horse for 2026. The children wrote a sentence to describe the picture, practising using their phonics to help with spelling.

PSHE & Computing 💻

In PSHE and computing we focused on e-safety. We read the story Smartie the Penguin and discussed how to stay safe when using technology.

The children learned that if something worries them online, they should stop and tell a trusted adult. We talked about how to make safe choices when using computers and tablets.

P.E. – Dance 🚂

In P.E. the children explored dance and movement.

They travelled around the hall like trains, moving in different ways. The children worked together to create tunnel shapes and practised moving slowly and quickly while listening carefully to the teacher’s signals.

At the end of the session, the children performed their dances to each other with music, showing fantastic listening and teamwork.

We are very proud of how hard the children have worked this week and how confidently they have been sharing their ideas. Thank you for your continued support at home!
