Mastering Maths in reception
Reception Class Weekly Blog
We’ve had a fantastic week in Reception, making the most of the beautiful sunshine with lots of outdoor learning! The children have especially enjoyed water play, exploring the mud kitchen, digging area, obstacle course, and riding bikes. These activities are not only fun but also help to develop important gross motor skills.
In English, we read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children loved retelling the story and even created their own books. We focused on front covers, titles, characters, settings, and key events. The children also explored the use of speech by drawing Jack and adding speech bubbles. We discussed the structure of a story, thinking carefully about the beginning, middle, and end. Guided reading sessions continued in small groups, helping to build confidence and fluency.
We also continued practising name writing and worked on forming numerals 4, 5, 6, and 7 correctly.
In Maths, we explored height by comparing objects and building our own tall towers. The children used finger patterns to represent the composition of 5 and worked on identifying missing parts of 5 through fun activities, including “5 little kittens jumping on the bed.” We also practised recognising whether a group of objects showed 5 or not 5. Moving on, we explored how 6 can be made from 5 and 1, and 7 from 5 and 2. The children practised recognising and representing numbers 6–9 on their fingers as “5 and a bit.”
In Science, we learned about our senses, focusing on what our eyes and nose help us to do. The children carried out a fun experiment by wearing blindfolds and attempting to write their names, helping them understand how important sight is.
In P.E., we practised throwing and catching using bean bags and foam javelins, developing coordination and control.
In History, we read Katie’s Picture Show and discussed transport from the past. The children then sorted pictures into past and present transport, showing great understanding of how things have changed over time.
In R.E., we talked about special places that are important to us and explored churches and why they are special to Christians.
We were so proud of all the children who took part in our class sharing assembly. They were incredibly confident, sharing their learning, singing, and dancing with the rest of the school and with parents and carers. Thank you to everyone who came to watch and support them—it meant so much to the children.
A gentle reminder: Reading regularly at home is incredibly important at this stage. Please continue to practise Level 2 and 3 phonemes and log onto Rhino Readers to support your child’s learning.
Thank you for your continued support!
