Reception Weekly Blog 🌟
What a fantastic week we have had in Reception! The children have been busy exploring, creating, investigating and learning across all areas of the curriculum.
Phonics
In phonics this week, we recapped the trigraphs ear, air, ure and igh. We also practised the tricky words and spellings “we” and “be.” The children enjoyed playing lots of phonics games where they blended sounds and sorted real and nonsense words to develop their reading fluency and confidence.
English & Science
Our English learning linked closely with Science as we explored parts of the body including the ears, mouth and hair. The children created wonderful collage faces and worked hard to label the different parts.
We also talked about how our bodies have changed since we were babies. The children reflected on all the things they can do now that they could not do as babies, drawing pictures and writing simple sentences about their growing independence. We explored similarities and differences between ourselves and celebrated how everyone is unique. The children were fascinated by looking closely at their fingerprints and thought carefully about special words to describe themselves.
David Attenborough Celebration & Outdoor Learning
This week we also celebrated David Attenborough turning 100 by becoming mini nature explorers! The children loved taking part in a nature walk scavenger hunt where they searched for bugs, webs, leaves, rocks, feathers, something green, something rough and something smooth.
We used our senses outdoors and completed an outdoor senses scavenger hunt before creating beautiful leaf and bark rubbings. The children also impressed us with their close observational drawings of plants and nature.
Maths
In Maths, we reviewed the composition of the numbers 6–9 using the “5 and a bit” structure and explored different ways to make 10. The children developed their understanding of “ten-ness” by creating their own collections of 10 objects.
We used counters, fingers and 10-frames to investigate the different parts that make 10 and practised representing these in a variety of ways.
History
In History, we explored different modes of transport and learned about steam trains. The children enjoyed listening to the story Steam Train, Dream Train and discussing how transport has changed over time.
R.E.
In R.E., we learned about why a church is special in Christianity and discussed what people might see, hear and do when they visit a church.
We are so proud of all the children for their enthusiasm and hard work this week. Have a lovely weekend!
