 Reception Class Weekly Learning Summary

This week, the children have enjoyed a variety of exciting learning experiences across the curriculum.

In Phonics, we continued revisiting Level 3 sounds and tricky words, practising blending and segmenting words and developing confidence in reading and writing. The children also worked on recognising and reading tricky words and enjoyed targeted activities to support their individual learning needs.

In English, the children focused on developing their writing skills. They practised writing their names independently, labelled parts of a plant using scientific vocabulary, wrote simple sentences about fascinating plants, and practised sentence writing using the structure “I see a…”

Our Science learning centred around plants. The children learned about the different parts of a plant, where plants come from, and how to care for them. They explored plants outdoors using magnifying glasses, planted seeds, and later watered and cared for the plants they had grown. The children were particularly fascinated by unusual plants such as the Venus Flytrap and enjoyed discovering interesting plant facts.

In Mathematics, the children continued their Mastering Number sessions, developing automatic recall and number fluency skills. They also explored 3D shapes, identifying and discussing different shapes and investigating which shapes roll and which do not.

In Geography, the children looked at aerial photographs of the school grounds and began creating their own simple maps. They discussed what they could see from above and used shapes and pictures to represent features around the school.

During RE, the children learned about stories that are special to Christians, focusing on the story of Jesus Calming the Storm. They discussed why this story is important to Christians and explored different versions of the story.

In Music, the children began learning about beat through their Charanga lessons, developing their listening and rhythm skills.

The children also enjoyed a range of creative activities, including sewing bookmarks, making Father’s Day cards and decorating mugs.

In PE, the children enjoyed practising for Sports Day, developing their running, balancing and team participation skills in preparation for the exciting event.

It has been a wonderful week of learning, and we are very proud of all the children’s enthusiasm and effort.
