This Week in Reception

We have had another busy and exciting week in Reception!

In Maths, we have been revisiting our learning from the Mastering Number programme. The children have been exploring the different ways numbers can be made and how numbers can be split into parts and combined to make a whole. We practised finding the "numbers within" numbers up to 10, identifying hidden amounts and recalling doubles facts, such as 5 + 5 = 10. The children showed great mathematical thinking as they explained their ideas and demonstrated their understanding of number relationships.

In Shape, Space and Measure, we explored 3D shapes. The children enjoyed investigating cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones and spheres, talking about their properties and spotting them in the world around us.

In Geography, we learned about maps and why they are useful. The children had lots of fun using their map-reading skills during a game of Pirate Map Bingo, following clues and identifying different features on a map.

In English, we used our senses to help us describe what we could see, hear, smell, touch and taste. The children enjoyed sharing their ideas and using exciting vocabulary to bring their descriptions to life.

In Spelling, the children were assessed on their recognition and recall of Level 2 and Level 3 tricky words. We were pleased to see the progress they have made in remembering these important words and applying them in their reading and writing.

In Design and Technology, we developed our weaving and sewing skills. The children practised weaving paper by carefully going over and under to create patterns. They then began sewing their own bookmarks using binka and a running stitch, showing excellent concentration and perseverance.

In Science, we continued our learning about plants. We explored what plants need to grow and stay healthy, discussing the importance of sunlight, water, air and nutrients from the soil. The children enjoyed sharing their knowledge and making connections to plants they have seen at home and in our outdoor area.

Well done, Reception! We are so proud of all your hard work, creativity and enthusiasm for learning this week.
