Reception Weekly News

What a fantastic week we have had in Reception!

Our biggest highlight this week was our amazing Sports Day. The children showed wonderful enthusiasm, determination and teamwork throughout the day. They took part in a variety of running races, relay events and an exciting carousel of sporting activities. We were so proud of how they encouraged one another, demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and gave every activity their best effort. Thank you to all the families who came along to support and cheer the children on.

In Literacy, we began creating our very own story books. The children have been developing their storytelling skills by designing title pages, choosing main characters and thinking carefully about story settings. They have enjoyed drawing detailed illustrations and writing simple sentences to describe their characters and where their stories take place. We have been practising using capital letters, finger spaces and sounding out words independently in our writing.

In Phonics, we continued to recap and secure our Level 3 sounds and tricky words. The children have been working hard on blending sounds to read words and segmenting sounds to support their spelling and writing. We have also continued targeted precision teaching to help children build confidence in their phonics knowledge.

In Mathematics, our Mastering Number sessions focused on counting and number patterns. We explored counting beyond 20, practised recognising number patterns and developed our understanding of how numbers are organised. The children enjoyed a variety of practical counting activities and demonstrated growing confidence when counting larger groups of objects.

In Science, we became young investigators as we explored ice and melting. The children made predictions about what would happen to ice cubes in different locations and observed how heat affects materials. They used scientific vocabulary to describe what they saw and discussed why some ice cubes melted more quickly than others.

In RE, we listened to the story of Zacchaeus and discussed how Christians believe Jesus showed kindness and forgiveness. The children thought carefully about how we can treat others with kindness and respect in our own lives.

In Geography, the children began creating their own 3D maps using construction materials. They explored features of towns and communities and used positional language such as next to, behind and in front of to describe their creations.

In DT, we continued developing our sewing skills as we worked on our bookmark projects. The children showed great perseverance as they practised threading and stitching.

We have been incredibly impressed with the children's resilience, creativity and positive attitudes this week. Well done, Reception!

Have a wonderful weekend.
