 This Week in Reception

Maths

This week, the children have engaged in activities that drew attention to the purpose of counting – to find out how many objects there are. They have used subitising to recognise quantities without counting and have been developing their counting skills to work out how many objects are in a set that cannot be recognised straight away. The children have also practised 1:1 correspondence, counting each number as they moved or tagged an object, and made their own counting wands to help them count carefully. We also explored how all sorts of things can be counted, including sounds!

English

This week, we have been exploring our favourite storybooks and characters as part of our writing-to-entertain unit. The children have been learning about the different parts of a book, including the front cover, title and illustrations, and have begun creating their own storybooks. They have been drawing and describing their favourite characters, adding labels using the sounds they know, and thinking about what their characters might say by using speech bubbles. We have been encouraging the children to talk about their ideas, draw their pictures and have a go at writing using their developing phonics knowledge. Every child's work is unique, and we celebrate all their wonderful attempts at communicating their ideas.

Phonics

Our new sounds this week have been ck, e, u and r. The children have been practising these sounds and applying their phonics knowledge during our activities.

RE – Harvest

In RE, the children have been learning about Harvest. We have been exploring the importance of harvest and thinking about the food we enjoy and how we can show appreciation for the things we have. This has provided opportunities for the children to share their own experiences and begin thinking about gratitude and caring for others.

A Lovely Open-Door Visit

It was lovely to see so many parents and grandparents at our open-door visit this week! Thank you for taking the time to come into the classroom, share in the children's learning and see what we have been getting up to. It was wonderful to welcome you all into our classroom.

Well done, everyone, for another fantastic week of learning!
